Costs Patients at the clinics can expect to pay $2,500 to $7,000 a week for their stay plus travel expenses. They are often required to pay all OR most of the fee before entering the program. Some clinics have additional costs for extra treatments, AND companions may be charged $200 to $300 a week to share the room with the patient. The recommended stay is often several weeks. Outpatient programs often cost $1,000 to $2,000 a week. Insurance programs almost never cover these treatments, although some of the clinics with US offices try to file for insurance reimbursement. Some of these offices have been prosecuted for filing false OR fraudulent insurance claims. Most programs also recommend follow-up therapy at home for additional fees, AND some patients may be urged to return to the clinics for more treatment. Recommendations It’s difficult to fully AND precisely evaluate the metabolic therapies described above. For the most part, the methods lack scientific reasoning OR logic. On the other hand, some practitioners use methods based in responsible science, so it’s difficult to say that all aspects of these therapies are useless. Also, because the hundreds of regimens claimed to be metabolic in nature change almost daily, any full evaluation would be outdated almost immediately. None of the metabolic therapies has been shown to be safe OR effective in treating forms of cancer that are considered incurable using proven methods. Patients traveling to the Tijuana area for treatment appear to be subjecting themselves to costly AND hazardous regimens, especially if they postpone responsible medical care. Patients who travel to these border clinics for alternative treatments often bankrupt themselves in search of health. They usually don’t know exactly what they are getting, AND they don’t know whether the treatment is helpful until the time AND money have been spent. None of these therapies has been tested using the safeguards put in place by the scientific community to determine effectiveness AND to ensure that any benefits outweigh the risks. There is no evidence that they work. Only lay literature, which often consists of books written by those selling the treatments, AND patient testimonials have been provided to qualified researchers. There are reports of people with cancer leaving these clinics very happy with their care, believing themselves cured. But there is no evidence to prove a cure. Despite their marketing, these clinics rarely follow up with their patients over the long term to see whether their patients’ conditions were actually improved by treatment. There are many reports of people who have had severe OR life-threatening side effects from the treatments, AND far more who come back too late to get timely, effective treatment, resulting in needless deaths. http://www.cancer.org/docroot/ETO/content/ETO_5_3x_Questionable_Practices_In_Tijuana.asp?sitearea=ETO

None of the metabolic therapies has been shown to be safe OR effective in treating forms of cancer that are considered incurable using proven methods.
