Bleeding caused by blood thinners
דיון מתוך פורום קרדיולוגיה וצנתורים
Hello, My mother had an ablation more than a year ago AND she is currently taking medicines against Atrial Fibrliiation as well as blood thinners. My mother recently had pneomonia AND got antibiotic. She took heart medicines at the same time. During the weekend she had a large amount of bloog in her urine at least a few times. The doctors believe that taking Coumadine together with antibiotics caused the bleeding AND advised her to stop taking coumadine until her INR levels stabilize. She did that AND now that she is off antibiotics they decided she needs to have some ultrasound test to check that all is okay with her kidneys AND then she should start taking coumadine again. I wanted to ask whether you believe the doctors should conduct additional test before they put her back on Coumadine. I am afraid I don't trust doctors in the specific hospital she went to (my father died there 10 years ago after he was released home when he was bleeding AND the doctors did even notice that) and would be happy to have a sense whether there are other possible avenues they should check. Thanks much! Dina
Hello Dina, There is a long list of drugs that potentiate the effect of coumadin AND can cause hemmorrhage with previoiusly administered dose. However, over-anticoagulation can expose lesions, mainly in bladder that manifest as hematuria She will probably need investigaton of the urinary system including US of kidneys AND bladder AND maybe even IVP AND cystoscopy. The invasive procedures can not be performed with coumadin. The decision wether to continue with coumadin depends on the risk of thromboembolism, AND should be evaluated AND discussed with her physician Thanks
