אני מצ"ב מידע שפורסם היום באתר של מייקרוסופט (ארה"ב), המצביע אולי על התפתחות מעניינת עבור רבים מחולי הסוכרת Artificial pancreas promising Needle-free care for insulin-dependent diabetes nears By Jacqueline Stenson MSNBC PHILADELPHIA, June 22 — Doctors are reporting early success with an artificial pancreas, an advance that could dramatically improve the care and quality of life of millions of people with diabetes who must now take shots of the hormone insulin to survive. THE APPROACH, which is showing promise in a small study of patients who have been followed for up to eight months, involves implanting a half-inch glucose monitor and a hockey puck-sized insulin pump that are intended to work together to keep a patient’s glucose, or blood sugar, under control Results were presented here Friday at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association. “It’s a historic moment that we’re seeing — the use of an artificial pancreas,” said Dr. David Klonoff, editor in chief of the journal Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics and a clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Diabetes afflicts an estimated 16 million Americans. Type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune condition that generally develops in childhood and runs in families, makes up 5 percent to 10 percent of cases. People with type 1 diabetes do not produce insulin because their immune system attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is necessary for cells to convert glucose into energy.
