If being used in the treatment of epilepsy or other convulsive disorder, the medication must be taken at regularly spaced intervals each day. If the medication is being used to treat insomnia, it should only be taken if patient can schedule at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep. These medications should only be used as a short-term measure to help induce sleep. Missed dose: If treating a seizure disorder, take a missed dose as soon as it is remembered if it is within 1 hour of the original schedule. Otherwise, skip the forgotten dose and take the next dose at next scheduled time. It can impair your ability to drive a car. Avoid drinking while you take one of these medications. If you are taking one of these medications to help you sleep, there is another good reason for avoiding alcohol. Drinking alcohol may make you drowsy at first, but it makes it more likely that you will wake up later on in the night and have a hard time going back to sleep. BREAST FEEDING Some benzodiazepines do pass into breast milk. The manufacturers recommend that in most cases women should not use them while breast feeding. The American Academy of Pediatrics is concerned about possible side effects in a nursing baby when the mother takes one of these medications for a long time. Ask your health care provider for advice before using them if you are breast feeding. DISCONTINUING MEDICATION Discontinue these medications only under the supervision of the health care provider. Depending on the length of time the medication has been used, it may be necessary to taper off the medication. The dosage of other medication may have to be adjusted. DRIVING AND HAZARDOUS EQUIPMENT OPERATION Do not drive or operate hazardous equipment until the effects of the medication have been determined. ELDERLY The elderly may have increased sensitivity to these medications and may have greater problems with side effects. FOODS No problems are expected. GENERAL INFORMATION Benzodiazepines have a tendency to cause dependency long after their usefulness has ceased. It is best to use these medications for as short a time as possible and in the lowest dose that provides adequate relief of the condition. INFANTS AND CHILDREN These drugs can be used in pediatric patients. Children have increased sensitivity to these medications and have a higher chance of side effects. Types of side effects seen are similar for children and adults. PREGNANCY It is best to avoid benzodiazepines during pregnancy, however, you should weigh the risks and benefits with the health care provider before taking these medications. An increased risk of birth defects is possible with these medications, especially in the first 3 months of pregnancy. These medications can also cause problems to the unborn child if used during the last few months of pregnancy.
