Dear Dr. Halperin, I understand that HIV infection can have symptoms that resembles influenza-like illness. I have 2 questions in that regard: First, if such symptoms occur due to HIV infection, can the HIV antibodies test still be negative even after the appearance of the symptoms assuming less than 3 months have passed from infection? Second, assuming the symptomatic illness has been caused due to HIV infection, can this symptomatic illness in itself be contagious in the same manner influenza is? i.e. can a person infected with HIV pass the symptomatic illness (not the HIV itself) through, lets say, resipratory system as in influenza even though it has been caused by the HIV virus?
