Here is the science behind why hot and cold is so important to the recovery process. When you get in a hot tub, the arteries and veins in your body increase in diameter to allow faster blood flow. This is called vasodilation. The heat causes everything to expand because your body is attempting to cool itself off. Your heart rate increases to pump your blood faster. Your arteries and veins increase in size and redirect the blood flow so the blood will pass closer to your skin to allow the heat to escape into the air. Now the reverse is true when you get in a cold environment. Everything gets smaller, your arteries and veins get smaller (called vasoconstriction). Your heart rate slows down and everything in your body is now attempting to conserve heat by pushing your blood to where it is needed most, your vital organs. The blood literally helps keep these warm. The contrast between hot and cold cause three major things to happen: 1) It causes a very effective system to flush out the bad things that were left in the muscles after exercise and in turn replace them with good things. The hot (vasodilation) and cold (vasoconstriction) are very effective tools to help flush out the muscles. During the cold part, the blood is pushed deep into the muscles and vital organs in to all the nooks and crannies that are hard to reach. Then during the hot part, all your blood vessels open up larger than normal and all the blood rushes back out to the surface to cool it self off. This helps bring out all the bad things (we call them negative byproducts) from deep inside the muscle. In turn, it pushes all the good stuff (nutrients from the food we eat such as carbohydrates, minerals, proteins, etc) deep into the muscle.
