Diverticulitis
דיון מתוך פורום גסטרואנטרולוגיה - מחלות דרכי העיכול
Dear Doctor, My husband is 59 years old and is generally fit and well. However, he has just had a second attack of Diverticulitis(the first one was about 5 years ago) and he has been told that the 'pockets' have increased in size and they recommend operating. Is this recommended or is it very risky? I realise that every operation has risks - is there a better alternative? .He was treated with antibiotics twice to which he responded well. (You may reply in Hebrew!)|Thanks, Keren.
Hi Keren It's a bit of unusual to send person ti surgeon on second episode 5 years apart To answer you properly I would need an additional information How severe were the episodes? How long is the involved segment? Colonoscopy?
Dear Doctor, Thank you for taking the time to respond. As to the severity of the episodes all I know is that he had bad pain which was immediately relieved by Flagyl and Ciprodex on both occasions. He was also on a very soft diet. AS for the size of the affected area, I have no idea . I could get a copy of his CT from the hospital(They told me the pockets had increased in size from the first episode) They also did a sigmoidoscopy which they said was clear and now reckon he should have a colonoscopy- this he did also after the fist bout of Diverticulitis but my GP insisted that he wait 6 - 8 weeks. I know it is not ethical for me to mention names of hospitals but I assume you can guess as we live in Ashkelon. Please advise further if possible. Thanks, Keren.
